If you've just purchased your first boat, you may not have the funds available to wash, wax or detail your new investment. We're here to help you set sail on your first adventure looking great. Here are the basics for waxing your boat.

Part 1: Wash your boat.

First, remove your boat from the water and secure it firmly on the trailer. Make sure the boat is parked on a flat surface and chock the wheels to prevent it from rolling. Of course, remove the boat trailer from the towing vehicle.

Second, you'll want to wash the boat before waxing. This is a lot like washing a car, but make sure not to use a pressure washer as it could damage the surface. Use a mile detergent and scrub gently to remove dirt and algae.

With the boat cleaned, it's time to remove the old wax. Use a rag soaked in toluene (or your favorite dewaxer) and sweep in one direction with light pressure. Continue across the boat until all wax is removed.

Now that the wax is removed, wash the boat again!

Part 2: Buffing the surface.

Your boat is already starting to shine! Now, use polish and buffing compounds to remove imperfections in the boats fiberglass. You can do this by hand or with a buffing tool. Start by applying the buffing compound at the transom and continue towards the bow in small circular movements. Once the the surface becomes glassy, you're done. If necessary, you can use the same technique with polish.

Part 3: Waxing the boat.

You're almost done! Choose an appropriate wax, the most common is Collinite 885. Use the same technique when buffing the surface to apply wax across the vessel. Remember, circular motions will prevent streaking. Once the wax has been applied, wait a minimum of 5-miuntes to allow it to dry. Pro-tip, you shouldn't have to wait more than 10-minutes.

You're almost done! The final step is to buff the dry wax away. Use a soft towel or terrycloth in circular motions to buff the wax to a shine.

Part 4: Put your boat in the water and enjoy your investment.
